Localhost Strangeness

Hello all,

I am experiencing some very strange behavior with the lo0 interface. I have
been running -current for almost 1 year. Sometime before 5.0-RELEASE I started
experiencing this...

   andromeda# ping localhost
PING localhost (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes
   64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.170 ms
   64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.125 ms
   ^C
   --- localhost ping statistics ---
17 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 88% packet loss
   round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.125/0.148/0.170/0.022 ms

and a tcpdump -i lo0 shows...

08:31:51.832405 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:31:51.832494 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo reply
08:31:52.834535 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:31:52.834603 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo reply
08:31:53.844567 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:31:54.854574 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:31:55.864590 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:31:56.874600 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:31:57.884611 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:31:58.894636 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:31:59.904788 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:32:00.914661 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:32:01.924666 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:32:02.934683 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:32:03.944719 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:32:04.954721 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:32:05.964732 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:32:06.974744 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request
08:32:07.984758 localhost > localhost: icmp: echo request

and ipfw contains this...

   andromeda# ipfw show
65000 4437 402440 allow ip from any to any
65535 20 2426 deny ip from any to any

This is _extremely_ frustrating for things like dns queries as they just
timeout randomly (as you can tell from the ping some packets made it through)
yet work sometimes. I need some insight into possible pilot error, etc.

regards,
Galen Sampson
