No such luck.  I already thought about that and chmod acd0 to 666 just in
case.

Again, no luck.  From vlc:

Yet the same DVD in the firewire drive works just fine.

I can certainly try recompiling the applications but, frankly, I'm really
doubtful that will solve the problem :-(
