However, I applied the (uncommitted) patch from http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/patches/acpi_irq.patch rebuilt the kernel, and removed the hint, and rebooted. acpi0: <ASUS P2B-DS > on motherboard acpi0: Overriding SCI Interrupt from IRQ 9 to IRQ 20 SMP: AP CPU #1 Launched! I now have my SMP system back, and no spurious interrupts either. Maybe this patch should be committed, if it causes no problems elsewhere?
