When I throw in my 0.02 EUR, please bear in mind I am no kind of
OS specialist, but I have to fight a lot with deficient hardware
in our school's network. So here my experiences:
1) Realteks are ok with workstations, but are no good with
servers. When requests from different machines arrive they
frequently give in. I never had any problems with Realteks on
my private computer at home (running -CURRENT).
2) Are you sure there are no IP conflicts in your network? If you
are using DHCP you should check it's address range.
3) Did you check for defect cables? If a NIC can only be run with
10 Mbit this might be the reason.
4) Do you have any routers? Check them too (a defect DSL router
might cause all kinds of troubles, though internet seems to
   work).

Just trying to give some more hints:

Uli.
