The problem is that when ACPI is in use, the normal keyboard controller based reset procedure doesn't work, so it says it's going to try a CPU reset. That causes a double fault and things go downhill. Alas, booting with ACPI disabled aparently hoses the interrupt routing so that I get no network I/O and lots of 'fxp0: device timeout' messages.
