SATA and FBSD

I am planning a new workstation and need to know if SATA will work on FBSD.

Is anyone  working with SATA drives on FBSD and if so is it stable?

Is it backwards compatible enough with ATA that it doesn't really matter for
basic functionality or does it require new driver code?
