* XMMS via esd and Arts running?
* XMMS and null-output plugin?

cdplay(1) and a cd is how I got onto the problem.
portinstall ogg|mpg123 with an ogg/mp3 will also give you plenty of testing.

There's wavplay also, but it needs proper wavheaders (ie: doesn't support 
"raw" wavs).
