And it turns out that the trick to getting this working is to disable the "Legacy USB Support" option in the BIOS, which has been turned on since day 1. With that, devices are recognised. So far, a USB mouse, 2 memory sticks, and bluetooth dongle have all worked. Now I have to get the Wacom tablet working in X... My thanks to everyone that offered assistance.
