And what's cruft one day may be useful another (when something stops 
working).

That's why want I'm looking for is options, rather than changing the 
default.  However I hadn't considered a kernel level syslog type facility as 
a solution.  While a lot of work it probably is the best approach.

Ok, I'll go away and put my thinking hat on.
