The default on i386 is 100 - this is not the case on alpha.

As long as I can remember alphas default to > 1000.
E.g. some are doing 1200 and other 1024 depending on the platform.
AFAIK there are reasons not be exactly 1000.
Why do you need 1000 instead of the system default?
