I am ignorant on the status of ICH5 sound, but I'll fall back to this 
obvious question (sorry if you're way beyond this point!):
Are you sure the device is not muted?  Use the 'mixer' utility to ensure 
"vol" and "pcm" are not set to 0 (50 is a reasonable value if they are).
