Hi everyone, I've been making lots of test to trace why my -current box was freezing. Cuz it was, it really froze, I mean the Siberia kinda freeze, no error msg, no droping in debugger, nothing. At the beginning it seemed random so I started to undo the last changes I made. So I made a plentyfull bunch of kernels, taking out one line at a time and deinstalled a few 3rd party ports. And finally, I found out that it didn't help. Bugger. The last change I didn't undo was the cvsupdate. So I deleted all of my src and obj and cvsup tag=RELENG_5_2. And sure as getting out of Siberia to move in Chernobyl, things went back to normal (execpt for sound, which I lost, and some other details that makes downgrading so much fun). I think I can pinpoint 2 problems. One is between atapicd and my DVD-RW, which is being discussed in another email by someone else in this list. The other is GEOM. First, there were no more "GEOM: create disk ad0 dp=..." at boot time. Then, at shutdown, the syncer was taking much more time and tries then it usually takes. Also, especially for my GBDE partition, whenever the "writing to disks" buffers were being very used, ice cube it went and much inconsistencies were detected at boot, even failing to background the fsck. I don't have much more details then that as it wouldn't core dump, nor go in debugging or anything. But I'll try to give as much details needed if asked so. Here is the usual: - dmesg after downgrading Timecounter "i8254" frequency 1193182 Hz quality 0 CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) (1094.15-MHz 686-class CPU) Origin = "AuthenticAMD" Id = 0x6a0 Stepping = 0 Features=0x383fbff<FPU,VME,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,PAE,MCE,CX8,APIC,SEP,MTRR,PGE,MCA, CMOV,PAT,PSE36,MMX,FXSR,SSE> AMD Features=0xc0400000<AMIE,DSP,3DNow!> real memory = 536805376 (511 MB) avail memory = 515952640 (492 MB) Pentium Pro MTRR support enabled npx0: [FAST] npx0: <math processor> on motherboard npx0: INT 16 interface pcibios: BIOS version 2.10 Using $PIR table, 11 entries at 0xc00fcda0 pcib0: <Host to PCI bridge> at pcibus 0 on motherboard pci0: <PCI bus> on pcib0 pci0: <memory, RAM> at device 0.1 (no driver attached) pci0: <memory, RAM> at device 0.2 (no driver attached) pci0: <memory, RAM> at device 0.3 (no driver attached) pci0: <memory, RAM> at device 0.4 (no driver attached) pci0: <memory, RAM> at device 0.5 (no driver attached) isab0: <PCI-ISA bridge> at device 1.0 on pci0 isa0: <ISA bus> on isab0 pci0: <serial bus, SMBus> at device 1.1 (no driver attached) pci0: <serial bus, USB> at device 2.0 (no driver attached) pci0: <serial bus, USB> at device 2.1 (no driver attached) pci0: <serial bus, USB> at device 2.2 (no driver attached) pcib1: <PCIBIOS PCI-PCI bridge> at device 8.0 on pci0 pci1: <PCI bus> on pcib1 pci_cfgintr: 1:7 INTA BIOS irq 10 pci_cfgintr: 1:7 INTB BIOS irq 5 pci_cfgintr: 1:9 INTA BIOS irq 11 pci1: <multimedia, audio> at device 7.0 (no driver attached) pci1: <serial bus, FireWire> at device 7.2 (no driver attached) ed0: <NE2000 PCI Ethernet (RealTek 8029)> port 0xd800-0xd81f irq 11 at device 9.0 on pci1 ed0: address 00:c0:a8:50:e2:f6, type NE2000 (16 bit) atapci0: <nVidia nForce2 UDMA133 controller> port 0xf000-0xf00f at device 9.0 on pci0 ata0: at 0x1f0 irq 14 on atapci0 ata0: [MPSAFE] ata1: at 0x170 irq 15 on atapci0 ata1: [MPSAFE] pcib2: <PCI-PCI bridge> at device 30.0 on pci0 pci2: <PCI bus> on pcib2 pci_cfgintr: 0:30 INTA routed to irq 10 pcib2: slot 0 INTA is routed to irq 10 pci2: <display, VGA> at device 0.0 (no driver attached) orm0: <Option ROM> at iomem 0xc0000-0xc8fff on isa0 sc0: <System console> on isa0 sc0: VGA <16 virtual consoles, flags=0x200> vga0: <Generic ISA VGA> at port 0x3c0-0x3df iomem 0xa0000-0xbffff on isa0 atkbdc0: <Keyboard controller (i8042)> at port 0x64,0x60 on isa0 atkbd0: <AT Keyboard> irq 1 on atkbdc0 kbd0 at atkbd0 psm0: <PS/2 Mouse> irq 12 on atkbdc0 psm0: model MouseMan+, device ID 0 fdc0: <Enhanced floppy controller (i82077, NE72065 or clone)> at port 0x3f7, 0x3f0-0x3f5 irq 6 drq 2 on isa0 fdc0: FIFO enabled, 8 bytes threshold fd0: <1440-KB 3.5" drive> on fdc0 drive 0 ppc0: <Parallel port> at port 0x378-0x37f irq 7 on isa0 ppc0: Generic chipset (ECP/PS2/NIBBLE) in COMPATIBLE mode ppc0: FIFO with 16/16/16 bytes threshold ppbus0: <Parallel port bus> on ppc0 ppbus0: IEEE1284 device found /NIBBLE/ECP Probing for PnP devices on ppbus0: ppbus0: <HEWLETT-PACKARD DESKJET 990C> PRINTER MLC,PCL,PML lpt0: <Printer> on ppbus0 lpt0: Interrupt-driven port sio0 at port 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4 flags 0x10 on isa0 sio0: type 16550A sio1 at port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 3 on isa0 sio1: type 16550A unknown: <PNP0303> can't assign resources (port) unknown: <PNP0a03> can't assign resources (port) unknown: <PNP0f13> can't assign resources (irq) unknown: <PNP0501> can't assign resources (port) unknown: <PNP0700> can't assign resources (port) unknown: <PNP0401> can't assign resources (port) unknown: <PNP0501> can't assign resources (port) Timecounter "TSC" frequency 1094147993 Hz quality 800 Timecounters tick every 1.000 msec ipfw2 initialized, divert disabled, rule-based forwarding enabled, default to deny, logging disabled GEOM: create disk ad0 dp=0xc441f760 ad0: 78167MB <Maxtor 6Y080L0> [158816/16/63] at ata0-master UDMA133 GEOM: create disk ad1 dp=0xc441f660 ad1: 76344MB <MAXTOR 6L080J4> [155112/16/63] at ata0-slave UDMA133 acd0: DVDR <PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D> at ata1-master UDMA33 GEOM: create disk cd0 dp=0xc448ee00 cd0 at ata1 bus 0 target 0 lun 0 cd0: <PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D 1.07> Removable CD-ROM SCSI-0 device cd0: 33.000MB/s transfers cd0: Attempt to query device size failed: NOT READY, Medium not present Mounting root from ufs:/dev/ad0s2a -
