I attempted the former, but apparantly the lockup is because of
interaction with other processes.  Perhaps involving surfing another web
site as a download is in progress.  I cannot try the X session on
another host as yet, but I will.  Switching to the console and not doing
anything else stressful on the machine allowed for the download to
complete without a lockup.  All times it has locked up I was doing other
things while the download was in progress.  However, no lockup has
occurred without the download happening.
