All I can say is it's not an isolated problem:

  769 root      96    0   442M   420M select 432:31  5.22%  5.22% XFree86

I have 96M of video memory total (dual head, a 64MB nv and a 32MB mga).  
xrestop shows about 55M used by pixmaps.  That still leaves over 250M of 
memory unaccounted for.

It seems to slowly grow over time, so I still suspect a memory leak somewhere.  
I've just gotten in the habit of restarting X every week or so...  (note: 
this is with XFree86 4.4, installed from a test version of the port someone 
posted a while back.  Same thing happened with 4.3 as well).
