dead disk or bad softupdates?

I'm getting a error on fsck on ad0 READ_DMA  ... uncorrectable.... 
softupdates inconsistency... on 5.2.1 when I booted the laptop this 
morning.  screen shot at http://www.langille.org/fsck-fails.jpg

So far, it looks like disk error.  Any ideas?
