Do you have an OHCI or a UHCI usb controller?
Have you tried booting without devices plugged into the usb ports?

I am asking this because a bug has been fixed in FreeBSD lately (after the 
release of 5.3) that fixes booting on machines with UHCI controllers with 
devices plugged in.
