Well its nice to know that changing the disposition of the driver seems to
perturb the problem...

Sounds like the digi driver doesn't like being unloaded.

Also leftovers are likely to be found during shutdown when the devices are
being closed down and there's dangling pointers.

Although ... The system doesn't unload modules on shutdown .. did you you
it yourself?
