I've committed my tree now because it cleans up a lot of almost but
not quite entirely identical tty initializations.  The committed
code is subtly different from the patch you tried so for your own
convenience you should probably back that out before cvsup'ing.

I'll try to reproduce the problem again tomorrow, any hints, clues
and ideas are most welcome.
