You're right, only most keyboards don't generate a single character for 
the arrow keys-- they generate something thing "^[OD", depending on 
your $TERM.

If you can convince your keyboard to generate a single key (perhaps a 
high-ASCII character using keyboard mapping?), you ought be able to use 
the patch with them, but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort.
