Hi,

My alpha 5.2-BETA2 (which was connected to my router) died (iirc: first time
ever).
I tried then to login with serial using kermit on my router to see what went
wrong. Kermit told me, that /dev/cuaa0 is allready in use. Of course - I had
misconfigured /etc/ttys with com1 and com2 running a login process. I
disabled them in ttys, and sent a HUP to 1. The login process coresponded to
/dev/ttyd0 on my router was still alive... and I was not able to kill it.

root 31471 0.0 1.7 1444 1012 d0- I<Es+ 10:50PM 0:00.16 login

I took the serial cable out and pluged it into my file servers interface...
kermit... worked
Back on my alpha, i saw an "OK" prompt... it was the boot manager

(/root/) C-Kermit>connect
Connecting to /dev/cuaa1, speed 9600
Escape character: Ctrl-\ (ASCII 28, FS): enabled
Type the escape character followed by C to get back,
or followed by ? to see other options.
----------------------------------------------------

OK ?
Available commands:
  heap show heap usage
  halt halt the system
  reboot reboot the system
bcachestat get disk block cache stats
autoboot boot automatically after a delay
boot boot a file or loaded kernel
  lsdev list all devices
[...]

so I typed "boot". Back on the working system,

The alpha syslog shows me:

I put both com1 and com2 gettys back to "on" on my router and reconnected
the serial cable - but no syslog entry on alpha right now... don't know
what really caused it, and if it's reproduceable and how...
