Well, I would really, really rather that our driver handled it. 
Understand, having the digital work needs two things> our driver, the 
section that talks to the mixer, must be able to turn on the correct 
channels.  There are a LOT of channels, more than you might suspect. 
This feeds into the other part: the mixer application (the thing that's 
probably gui'ed, that you turn on levels with) must turn o nthe right 
set of values.  At least so far, all of the mixer applications haven't 
had enough channels to brighten my day.

Well, maybe I can use the info from ALSA, the Linux sound (which does 
work on digital output, does turn on the right set) to id things.  If I 
can keep on with this, I would surely love to get this working.
