serial console problems

the receiver part of the serial console seems to be somewhat problematic,
i have to type almost every character more than once to be acccepted, making
debugging with kgdb impossible. BTW, 5.4 works fine, so it's not a hardware
problem, nor parity/speed/start-stop bits.
