   How about pointing the server address directly:

 	# mount -t smbfs -o -I=porta1.ip.addr.ess //porta1/tmpdown /tmpdir

 	or

 	# mount -t smbfs -o -I=porta1.fqdn //porta1/tmpdown /tmpdir
