did ptys get axed?

Running a kernel built from three hour old sources.  Now only
*two* ptys are created and consequently screen doesn't start.
Is this planned or accidental?  This is definitely motivating
me to get familiar with the kernel code but others may fail
to see this great learning opportunity....
