All he needs is zfs_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf, and to mark the affected filesystems "late". Alex, make sure you're up to date with mergemaster etc. Try running 'rcorder /etc/rc.d/*' and check that zfs (which should be between mountcritlocal and FILESYSTEMS) comes before mountlate (which should be somewhere between DAEMON and LOGIN).
