Maybe something along the lines of a top-level 'rc_outputs' with a list of output types, then each type would have its own knobs to control how it operates. From reading the rest of this thread I think we already have 3 candidates: quiet, normal, fancy. I'd be willing to work with anyone willing to work on this.
