Hello Juergen,
I decided to build a debug kernel as you suggested with DDB, KDB,
KDB_TRACE, and KDB_UNATTENDED as you suggested.  The first time the kernel
panicked, I did not get a dump, but the system did save the second panic. 
The backtrace is about the same, but the initial information looks much
better.
