init 1 hangs computer when called from within gnome

hi, 

not sure if its a bug or some error in configuration on my part. 

I'm running a core2duo Lenovo t61p laptop. I built i386 world and debug 
kernel from current and found that calling init 1 from a gnome terminal 
causes the machine to hang....with some red "blood" leaking near the top 
panel.
