From day one (literally) the stated goal has been for mergemaster not
to make any changes to the installed system by default. I am very
resistant to changing that principle 9 years (!) later.

The /etc/ or ~/.mergemasterrc files exist for this purpose, and is what
I use to make sure I have -i enabled by default, so I'm sure it will
continue to be supported. :)
