Try typing blind... I have the same symptoms on one of my systems when I 
drop to single user mode (it's the only one with a USB keyboard, dunno 
if it's coincidence or not). keypresses are not echoed anymore but 
command output is. Going back multi-user fix the console. I've not had 
time yet to track it down.
