What branch of FreeBSD are you running?
Did you load the nvidia kernel module (add nvidia_load="YES"
to /boot/loader.conf)? 
What messages were emitted after loading it? 
What nvidia card do you have ( pciconf -lv | grep -B5 VGA)?
