I think once you turn those options off, your machine should be able to handle this, though I wouldn't run anything else on it. On a single 1.8Ghz 686, I got these occasionally, when backups were done over gigabit and a movie was playing on it. I've since reconfigured the machine as dedicated media server and replaced the router with a headless 3Ghz 686, also running squid.
