switching from legacy to ahci on intel ICH-7M?

My current laptop has an AHCI-capable disk controller and SATA disk but,
it appears, the manufacturer has no interest in implementing AHCI in the
BIOS.

Is there an example of how one might (re-)initialize the controller to
take advantage of AHCI and the disk's NCQ capabilites somewhere?
