I don't have another SATA DVD drive, so I went with your second idea. I added ahci_load=YES to loader.conf and reconfigured /etc/fstab so that it booted properly. The end result is that I now have a working DVD drive in AHCI mode. Thank you very much... I didn't know that ahci driver existed.
