The zephyr support in libpurple is incredibly ancient, and doesn't
really work very well.  I have a port prepared that packages libzephyr
and the standard zephyr clients directly, in ports/141790 (though I
have a couple of tweaks to the submitted version in my queue).
I'd almost say it would be worth just ripping the zephyr support out
of the libpurple port.
