iwi(4): firmware error OR panic: iwi firmware not idle, state ASSOCIATING

My laptop has a miniPCI iwi(4) NIC which (basically) works under
stable/7 and stable/8, but after I came back from visiting folks last
weekend, I found that under 9.0-CURRENT, attempts to make use of it
usually yield a stream of

iwi0: firmware error

messages until I take the interface down ("ifconfig iwi0 down").

And in the case where that doesn't happen, I get a panic; I've attached
the core.txt file from one of those I got this morning at r210190. (The
uname output reflects r210190M, as I had inserted some printf()s into
src/sys/net/if.c to try to resolve a different issue.)

I welcome clues; I normally update the CURRENT slice on the laptop
daily, using a local mirror of the SVN repository that I sync on a daily
basis in the wee small hours of the morning.

Peace,
david
