ah i see. the old way however is no longer documented anywhere (on purpose).
i read somewhere that at some point some devs wanted to remove it, but others
wanted it to stay.

personally i think adding a new switch to enable legacy mode would be nice (or
adding an envar).

but that's just my 0,02$
