As I hadn't checked this mailing list before starting out this evening, I was doomed to stw & came across http://repo.or.cz/w/ralink_drivers.git via the freebsd forum, before trying your patch, I had successfully build the freebsd 8 driver from there on current & managed to get the card working, using csup to update src as a test of connectivity.
