The problem is not restricted to hte WD My Passport drive. The
memstick

ugen6.2: <USBest Technology> at usbus6
umass0: <USBest Technology USB Mass Storage Device, class 0/0, rev 2.00/1.00, addr 2> on usbus6
da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 scbus4 target 0 lun 0
da0: < 0.00> Removable Direct Access SCSI-2 device
da0: Serial Number 08102201c42413
da0: 40.000MB/s transfers
da0: 963MB (1974271 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 963C)
da0: quirks=0x2<NO_6_BYTE>

will also cause the system to wedge when removed. I failed to report
that /dev/da0, /dev/da0s1, /dev/da0s1a, etc were not destroyed when
the WD My Passport was removed.
