VMware tools were not installed at the time. I'll try that, but I doubt 
it will make a difference for resizing.

The ESXi 5.5 default controller for FreeBSD, LSI Logic Parallel ...

I'll try it with the LSI Logic SAS controller as well to see if that 
makes a difference.
