I've reported a similar issue in 04/21 [1] and I keep seeing the problem
around:

# ❯❯❯ make check-old
make warning: $5bZ�
: No such file or directory.
make warning: $5bZ�
: No such file or directory.

make warning: $5bZ�
: No such file or directory.

make warning: $5bZ�
: No such file or directory.

To remove old files and directories run 'make delete-old'.
To remove old libraries run 'make delete-old-libs'.
