OK, I dug deeper, to end the silence it's necessary to switch from /dev/dsp0 to /dev/dsp1 for each affected application, whilst there's playback from the application.

Then (confusingly) adjusting _either_ slider – /dev/dsp0 or /dev/dsp1 – affects the output.

Is this expected?
