tmpmfs is set to "AUTO" in /etc/defaults/rc.conf.

Try setting tmpmfs="NO" in /etc/rc.conf, reboot, and see if this
prohibits the creation of /tmp as a tmpfs.

You can also set PKG_TMPDIR or TMPDIR to point to, say, /var/tmp.

E.g.:

export PKG_TMPDIR=/var/tmp

or

setenv PKG_TMPDIR /var/tmp

This is expected when /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 ceases to exist, among other
files within /tmp.
