I am not 100% sure, but I believe conftest is something from the build 
system, most likely autotools.  Autotools (and possibly others) work by 
compiling, and I guess sometimes running, small code snippets to figure 
out things about the host system.
This is just a guess, but looking at

and

seem to agree with me.
