This here is from the older r342378 system:

Mixer mix      is currently set to 100:100
Mixer rec      is currently set to 100:100
Mixer igain    is currently set to 100:100
Mixer ogain    is currently set to 100:100
Mixer monitor  is currently set to 100:100
Recording source: mix


[guru_at_c720-r342378 ~]$ rec -c 2 /tmp/out.wav

which is recording just fine. As I said, I tested all other values for
'=rec' too, i.e. the devices: speaker, mic, mix, monitor
