I saw similar behaviour with STABLE when trying to use a CompactFlash card on a CPU board that didn't support the default range of I/O ports. This might not be the case you have, but I saw output just like that quoted above. The ata device gets reported, but there is no 'ad' device following it like there normally is. In my case the solution was to use the I/O port range hidden in the manufacturer's notes on their web site.
