Download the 'cdboot.iso' image via ftp from current.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/snapshots/alpha/ISO-IMAGES/, burn it to a cd, and then 'boot dka500' (or similar, see the 'show dev' output from the SRM >>> prompt), should boot off the cd with no problems. CD installs are *far* easier on on Alpha, to the point that floppy-boot installs have been deprectated in 5.1-CURRENT as of a few weeks ago.
