When it works, is that when you have been using it in another operating system, and then reboot into FreeBSD and try it? IIRC, some of these multi-function devices require a code sending to them by the printer driver to tell them to behave like printers (instead of being a fax machine or a scanner or whatever). Unfortunately, finding out what that code is and sending it can be tricky.
