I can't answer Q2 - but I'll post my make.conf

As to Q1 - in /usr/src/UPDATING it mentions the things in the kernel
etc. that needs to be commented out. Very straight to the point.

As to Q1,

X_WINDOW_SYSTEM=xorg
CPUTYPE?=athlon
CFLAGS= -O -pipe
COPTFLAGS= -O -pipe
PERL_VER=5.8.5
PERL_VERSION=5.8.5
PERL_ARCH=mach
NOPERL=yo
NO_PERL=yo
NO_PERL_WRAPPER=yo
NO_PF=yo
