ATAPI devices default to PIO (DMA off).  See the ata(4) man page, 
specifically the 'hw.ata.atapi_dma' sysctl.  To enable DMA for ATAPI 
devices, you have to add 'hw.ata.atapi_dma="1"' to /boot/loader.conf or 
use atacontrol(8).
